# What Does Capex Include Before You Calculate Free Cash Flow?

TLKM’s FY2025 cash-flow statement separates equipment and intangible purchases. A verified financial-series check shows why that distinction changes the calculation by Rp2.897 trillion.

## Summary

Check which cash payments a tool includes in “capex” before using it to calculate free cash flow. In a read-only Trade Inc financial-series check, TLKM’s FY2025 capex field matched its Rp22.871 trillion cash purchases of property and equipment. The audited statement separately reported Rp2.897 trillion of intangible-asset purchases. Including both reduces the cash-flow remainder from Rp40.971 trillion to Rp38.074 trillion.

This is a guide to choosing and checking a financial-research workflow, not a valuation of TLKM. Published by Trade Inc Research, affiliated with Trade Inc. Evidence checked on 17 October 2026; the worked example covers the consolidated year ended 31 December 2025.

## Key takeaways

- A capex label is not enough: reconcile its value to the original cash-flow lines.
- Equipment-only spending and equipment plus intangible purchases answer different questions.
- Preserve the sign convention. A negative cash-outflow field is added to operating cash flow, not subtracted again.
- A calculated cash remainder is not a dividend budget or proof that a stock is cheap.

## The missing line changes the answer

Suppose you want a research tool to estimate cash left after purchases of long-lived tangible and intangible assets. TLKM’s audited FY2025 cash-flow statement provides three inputs for that explicitly defined calculation:

| Consolidated FY2025 item | Rp billion |
| --- | ---: |
| Cash generated by operating activities | 63,842 |
| Cash purchases of property and equipment | 22,871 |
| Cash purchases of intangible assets | 2,897 |

Purchases are shown here as positive spending amounts; the filing shows them in parentheses as outflows. These are full-year consolidated figures, not quarterly numbers or parent-only cash flows. Source: [Telkom’s audited FY2025 statements, printed page 5, PDF page 13](https://www.telkom.co.id/minio/show/data/lampiran/1778544447359_original_LK-Konsolidasian-Telkom-Tahun-2025-Audited-Eng.pdf#page=13).

Using equipment purchases alone gives **63,842 − 22,871 = Rp40,971 billion**. Including intangible purchases gives **63,842 − 22,871 − 2,897 = Rp38,074 billion**. The Rp2,897 billion difference is a change in what the calculation includes, not a cash-flow improvement or deterioration.

For this article, “free cash flow” means operating cash flow less those two cash-purchase lines. We do not present that definition as Telkom management’s own metric, a universal definition, or a complete measure of cash available to shareholders.

## What the Trade Inc check actually demonstrated

Trade Inc’s [public MCP connection guide](https://tradeinc.app/en/blog/idx-research-existing-ai-tool-mcp) describes annual and quarterly financial-series retrieval through a compatible, authenticated AI workspace. MCP is the connection standard that lets the workspace use the service’s tools. Access depends on the account; this is not a claim that every plan or website screen exposes identical fields.

In our read-only check on 17 October, the returned FY2025 record was denominated in IDR and ended on 31 December 2025. Its operating-cash-flow figure was Rp63.842 trillion and its capex figure was **negative Rp22.871 trillion**. The record’s retrieval timestamp was 13 October 2026 at 00:04 WIB; that timestamp is not the financial period or the issuer’s publication date.

The capex amount exactly matched the filing’s equipment-purchase line. It did not, by itself, include the separate Rp2.897 trillion intangible-purchase line in our broader definition. This is an observation about this ticker, period and returned field—not proof that every company’s capex field follows the same mapping, or that another displayed free-cash-flow metric uses it.

With the signed field, the equipment-only calculation is **63,842 + (−22,871) = 40,971**, in Rp billion. Subtracting a negative field instead would produce the wrong result. We took the intangible input from the audited statement rather than assuming the generic label already included it.

## A practical acceptance test for a research tool

Try a bounded request in your connected workspace:

> Retrieve TLKM’s FY2025 annual financial figures. Show the currency, period end, operating cash flow and signed capex value. Compare the capex amount with the equipment and intangible cash-purchase lines in the audited annual statement. Calculate both definitions separately and list exclusions. Do not create a Screener or start a backtest.

The prompt is a reusable check, not a guarantee that an AI client can open every PDF. If it cannot read the source, open the statement yourself and supply the relevant lines. A confident answer without a field-to-source reconciliation has not passed the test.

Evaluate the workflow on four practical points: whether it preserves the reporting period and units; exposes signs and missing values; lets you trace a number to a source line; and makes exclusions visible. A tool that quickly retrieves a number can still require manual source work before that number is suitable for your calculation.

## Why Rp38.074 trillion is not freely distributable cash

Our definition excludes other investing movements and financing obligations. The same audited page reports Rp7.356 trillion of lease-principal repayments under financing activities, alongside loan repayments and dividend payments. Those do not disappear because the equipment-and-intangibles calculation is positive. The statement also contains advances and other investing movements that we have not included in our chosen two-line deduction.

Do not substitute total net investing cash flow for capex without explaining the change: that subtotal combines purchases with other outflows and inflows. Equally, do not mix cash payments with asset additions or depreciation simply because all relate to investment. This demonstration does not separate maintenance from expansion spending or assess future commitments.

## Who needs this workflow—and who may not

Trade Inc’s financial-series retrieval can be useful if you regularly move from several issuers’ financial records into a compatible AI workspace and want a repeatable source-checking process. The demonstrated benefit is structured retrieval; the audited filing remains necessary to establish the calculation’s boundaries.

If you only need one issuer’s annual cash-flow calculation, its free audited PDF and a spreadsheet may be sufficient. Buying a tool solely to subtract three disclosed numbers is unnecessary. No competitor ranking or plan recommendation follows from this single-record check.

The decision rule is simple: agree the cash-flow definition first, reconcile the fields second, then compare results. A later restatement or a different field mapping would require a fresh reconciliation; repeating the same formula would not resolve it.
